Young Manufacturing Cat Eye Walnut Dining Set — Extension Table & 6 Chairs, Refinished 1960s Mid-Century Modern

A 1960s walnut dining set by Young Manufacturing Co. of Norwood, North Carolina — extension table with two leaves and six chairs, four side and two with arms. The sculpted pedestal base and the tall cat eye chair backs are what this line is known for, and it's the kind of design that photographs like a far more expensive set.

The table and all six chairs were refinished by hand rather than sprayed, so the grain stays visible and the color stays warm. Seats are reupholstered in vintage Kvadrat wool — the Danish mill that supplies Fritz Hansen and Carl Hansen, fabric that runs over $100 a yard on its own. The soft oatmeal keeps the set from reading heavy or dated.

A bit of history
The chairs still carry their original Young Manufacturing tag from Norwood, North Carolina — one of the better American mid-century makers, quietly doing sculptural walnut work on par with names that get far more attention. The set was sold new by J.B. Van Sciver Co., the Camden furniture house that ran stores across South Jersey and eastern Pennsylvania from 1881 to 1983. It's been in the region a long time.

Comparable pieces
This set almost always surfaces as-found, with tired finish and original 1960s fabric. A set of six unrestored Young chairs is currently listed at $2,495 on Chairish, and the table alone at $3,995 as-is from a mid-century dealer — over $6,000 for the same set in worse condition. Buying it already done costs less than buying a rough one and paying to bring it back.
